Crafts and Critters

Finally got a tracking number for the fabric I ordered to make the spectres - get hyped!

through-the-elsen-eyes asked: [[ Hey hey hey! If you're still doing specter plush requests, could you possibly do a half-blind specter, the little guys found in zone 3? They were my favourite of the whole game >u< ]]

Sure, I’ll make one or two~!

I was half playing with the idea of making Khoshekh plushies and what they should look like

but then I remembered that the fine folks at WTNV kindly asked the fandom not to sell fan art of any kind, so I dropped the idea.

… And then I went on Etsy and did a search on Night Vale.

Two pages worth of WTNV related products up for sale.

Shame on you. Shame on all of you.

The same goes for the folks who continue to sell unauthorized Homestuck fan art.

I understand the desire to make things for your fandom and to make a little money off of it, but when you do so even though the people directly responsible for providing you with the source material you love so much have asked you not to

what does that say about your character?

And for those I’ve seen who know about the Facebook post listed above, but continue to disregard it on the grounds that they ‘disagree with it’?

You are scum.

Getting to sell fan art of someone else’s intellectual property is a privilege, never a right.

You’re free to make whatever you like for yourself or as gifts and post photos online for your portfolio and the praise and accolades of fellow fans and what have you, just don’t SELL shit if the creator has told you not to.

i just wish they sold a wider variety of things on the official store (like stickers (non-bumper), and earrings, and necklaces, etc. Hopefully they’ll get around to it eventually.

Exactly! That’s what happened with the official Homestuck shops - it just took a little over two years…

After they cracked down on fan artists selling Homestuck stuff, they started offering the hoodies and necklaces and the scalemate/consort plushies, since there was a HUGE market for that stuff.

I guess the best I can offer to folks who WANT official merch that they are interested is: make some noise! I haven’t been to any of their live shows, but if there’s a Q&A at the end, bring up merchandise!

Send (polite) emails! Tweets! Let them know there’s a market for this stuff! Like with the Homestuck merch it might take them a while to figure out how to mass produce things, but I’m sure it will be worth it in the end.

Anonymous asked: how about an abstract spectre?

Those little guys? Hm! It would be interesting to figure out how to make the eyes look scribbly enough!

Here we go, a side by side comparison between the original fat spectre and its MUCH faster to complete counterpart.

I’m actually quite happy with how the heat-n-bond worked! I used the Lite strength transfers as opposed to the heavy duty ones I usually use, and I noticed there was a lot less pulling away of the adhesive from the fleece~! So I can safely recommend Lite Heat-n-bond for folks that want to use fleece appliques for their projects.

I used the polyester setting on my iron and kept a baking sheet (wax paper) between the fleece and the iron and the fleece didn’t become noticeably shinier from the heat, which was nice.

Other differences between the two are the mouth shape, and the fact that a put the eyes a bit too far apart on the newer one. Oops!

I REALLY like how smooth the lines are on the one on the right! Plus the added stiffness of the mouth makes the body curve inwards after sewing which gives it a nice 3-dimensional effect, I think!

And the best part?

Using Heat-n-Bond as opposed to hand stitching shaved off a whopping 25 MINUTES from the total construction time!

EDIT: The one on the right is up for grabs for anyone who doesn’t want to wait until I make a mass listing for all the spectres!

Y’all can expect these to be in my shop after my next payday, so I can order more fleece! I’m also considering offering other spectres that seem to be popular, such as

 • Blind Spectre

 • Mute Spectre

 • Infernal (aka Loki) Spectre

Are there any other spectres y’all would like to see offered?

I’ve been wanting to make one of these guys for a while now!At about 16 inches long and 12 inches at its widest, this fat spectre plush is great for squeezing, cuddling, and using as a long distance projectile. This is just a prototype I made for myself out of scrap fleece I had laying around my work room. If/when I make these to sell, I’m going to alter the mouth just a bit to be more on-model and use iron on transfers for the face as opposed to hand stitching (which actually took up half of the total construction time)Let me know what you guys think! And when they are up in my shop, should I offer ones made from minky as well? Or should I just stick with fleece?
